YOUR FAN’S LOCATION DOES MATTER
You wouldn’t place your TV outdoors, would you? Electrical components aren’t designed to get wet!
The same logic applies to ceiling fans. In addition to aesthetic issues like rust, operational malfunctions, and technical difficulties can occur if you don’t choose the right outdoor fan for your space. Some fans are designed for direct water exposure, while others are not.
There are two American agencies that provide independent certifications for product safety and quality, including ceiling fans: Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and Electrical Testing Laboratories (ETL). That’s why you might see the “UL rating” or “ETL rating” on the fan’s box or online information.
These ratings are divided into two general categories for outdoor ceiling fans: damp rating and wet rating. We took it a step further and innovated the WeatherMax® technology, designed to withstand tough weather elements like salty air and electrical storms.
MOISTURE-RESISTANT CEILING FAN
Ceiling fans with a damp rating are ideal for covered outdoor spaces like patios and porches. Their ability to withstand moisture exposure also makes them suitable for indoor spaces like bathrooms and laundries. Some of our favorite damp-rated outdoor fans include the Kennicott, Solaria, and Mill Valley fans.
Our outdoor ceiling fans, including our damp-rated fans, undergo testing to ensure that the fan’s finish, blade finishes, and all electrical components of the fan can withstand the environmental elements it will experience in a covered outdoor structure.
WATERPROOF CEILING FAN
For outdoor spaces exposed to snow or rain, a wet-rated ceiling fan is your best choice. Some of our favorite waterproof outdoor ceiling fans for decks include the Mariner and Tidewater fans.
Waterproof fans are designed and built to withstand direct contact with water and moisture, making them ideal for patios and pergolas. These fans are constructed with moisture-resistant motors and all-weather blades for lasting and secure performance.
WEATHERMAX (SALTWATER + WATER RESISTANT)
WeatherMax ceiling fans are designed for outdoor use with features and technologies that go beyond average water-rated fans. WeatherMax designs are corrosion-resistant and salt-air resistant, making them perfect for beach properties or homes exposed to salt from snowplows. They also come with our SureSpeed® Guarantee for high-speed airflow performance.
They feature premium materials to maintain their shape and durable materials to ensure proper blade pitch. Both technology and design are carefully considered, so it’s reassuring to know that fans like the Trimaran and Havoc will stand the test of time.
If you like the look of an outdoor ceiling fan, you can also use it in indoor spaces! However, you cannot use an indoor ceiling fan in your outdoor spaces. For more assistance on how to choose a ceiling fan, check out our ceiling fan buying guide.
